Pet Memorial Tattoo Ideas: Paw Prints, Portraits and Small Tributes

The most popular pet memorial tattoos are a paw print - ideally your own pet's, traced from an ink or clay print - and a portrait from a favourite photo. Smaller tributes add a name, a date, a halo or the pet's initial to a paw or a silhouette.

If your pet is still with you, or the vet offers a clay print after it has passed, you can tattoo its real paw. Press the paw onto a pad of non-toxic ink or into clay, photograph the print straight on with a ruler beside it, and take the photo to your artist. They will clean up the edges and decide whether to tattoo it at true size or scale it.

For a portrait, bring several photos: one sharp, well-lit face shot for the likeness and others that show the colour and markings. Pick an artist with healed animal portraits in their portfolio - fur texture is its own skill.

IIIQuestions people ask

What does a paw print tattoo mean?

Love for an animal, often a specific pet. Several paws in a trail can stand for a pet that has gone - walking away, or walking with you.

Where should a pet memorial tattoo go?

Small paws suit the wrist, ankle or inner arm. Portraits need the outer forearm, calf or upper arm.
